1. Scope

Unless otherwise indicated, all walls, partitions, and ceilings on which gypsum board has been applied, and to which a texture is to be added, are included

1.1 This recommended specification covers preparation of gypsum board prior to application of texture materials by various methods such as spray, roller, brush, trowel, etc.

1.2 All materials to be used in accordance with all codes, specifications and manufacturer' s recommendations

1.3 Gypsum board finish shall be completed to the desired, or specified level of finish prior to preparation for texture application.

2. Job Conditions

No materials shall be applied until a minimum temperature of 50°F has been maintained for a period of at least 48 hours in the working area and the surface moisture has been stabilized (dry). The stated temperature, along with adequate ventilation shall be maintained throughout the texture preparation and texture application process, and until all materials are dry and stable. Unvented gas and oil heaters shall not be used.

3. Materials And Surface Preparation

3.1 For texture surfaces intended as final decorative finish.

3.1A Prior to texture application, entire board surface to be treated to minimize water soluble discoloring agents from leaching to the surface, and to minimize absorption differential by using one of two recommended procedures:

    (1) Apply a moisture barrier sealed with a perm rating of 1 or less to the board surface. This product must be compatible with, and provide a bondable surface for the texture materials to be used.

    (2) Apply a product recommended by the texture or paint manufacturers for this purpose.

3.2 For texture surfaces to be painted.

3.2A Prior to texture application, treat entire board surface to minimize absorption differential by using one of three recommended procedures.

    (1) Apply a thin coat of gypsum board joint compound to the entire surface as defined by level 5 of the LEVELS OF GYPSUM BOARD FINISH.

    (2) Apply a coat of material specifically formulated for this purpose to the entire surface.

    (3) Apply a product recommended by the texture or paint manufacturers for this purpose. Allow to dry thoroughly before texture application.
